Dear Parents, and Students,

Welcome to our Grade 7 webpage.
Please refer to this frequently as I will endeavour to update it weekly with all the exciting things that are happening in our class. The Intermediate division will be doing things a little differently this year and the students will experience full rotary for the content subjects. Each teacher in the Intermediate Division will be teaching one subject to each of the four classes. The homework will be posted here as well as in various places in the classroom. If available, the assignment requirements, rubrics and information sheets will be linked to the subject and assignment. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me at the address below. This is the best way to contact me and I will be better able to respond in a timely fashion. I am looking forward to a great year with the students.

LOOK WHAT WE ARE DOING

In language this term we are continuing with our Guided Reading groups and language activities. We are concentrating on summarizing and point of view this term and many of our assignments and reading pieces will be focussed on these. We will also be looking at Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet in depth, both in language and in drama this term. There will be some reading and writing assignments based on the play. The students will also be doing some reading responses on the class blog. . Make sure you check out their blog responses at this site http://awinch.edublogs.org

After March break we will be looking at whose point of veiw might be missing and telling stories from a different characters point of view. We will also be doing some cool stuff online with Bitstrip Comics. Stay tuned for those.

.

In oral language we will be doing some readers theatre in drama and a lot of character studies. Students will be learning to show emotion and expression in their reading . This will help prepare them for a role in Romeo and Juliet. A lot of their oral work will be assessed in drama and poetry this term. Students are reminded that their participation in the Guided Reading groups and class discussions is a part of their oral language.

This term we will be focussing on drama in the Arts program. Each class will be studying a specific Shakespearan play. Grade 7's will be doing Romeo and Juliet and the Grade 8's will look at Macbeth. We will also be doing some warm up improvisation games to get the students comfortable acting in front of others. Each class will perform a mini version of the play in front of their peers at the end of their rotary block.

My class will be studying Romeo and Juliet in a little more depth and putting on a longer performance at the end of the year. The performance date has been set for June 24 and will be during the day. It will be open to parents during the last period of the day if you would like to come and watch the play.

Music will not be assessed this term.

Geography is all about Land Forms, Climate, Rivers and Agriculture. Students will be working on physical dioramas in small groups and they are presently well underway.

History this term is Conflict and Change. The students will be looking at the 1837 Rebellions and how they changed the course of Canadian history.

Science will be focussed on structures this term. Students will be involved in creating and testing different types of structures for strength and stability. The students will be creating their own structures that demonstrate the use of different forces when they create their can crushers.

Our Kandalore trip was excellent, with great weather and very few bugs in spite of what the students might tell you. We had many opportunities to be in or around the water while canoeing, kayaking or swimming. The water was wonderful and very refreshing on those very hot, humid days we had. Most of the students participated whole heartedly in the program, stepping out of their comfort zones and trying a lot of new things such as rock climbing on a real rock face, low ropes challenges, archery and the water challenges. The food was excellent and there was plenty of it and all the students enjoyed the meals. Our campfire on the last night was fun with all cabin groups participating in the event, including the teachers who sang a cool song about our experience there. We all took lots of pictures so keep checking the website as some will be posted here for everyone to see what a great place it is. Read about some of our experiences on our Kandalore Notes page.

The students will be doing a full rotary this year with different teachers for all of the content subjects, including The Arts. Visual Art, Music and Drama will be taught by Mrs. Winch, Geography will be taught by Mr. Cook, Science by Mrs. Sawyer and History by Mrs. McCrindle.

Each subject will be taught each term, except for The Arts which has a different focus for each term. Third term we are focussing on Drama with a special emphasis on the tragic plays by William Shakespeare.

We have completed our Geometry unit with a culminating activity of tesselations in the style of M.C. Escher. Our new unit will study Measurement, particularly surface area and volume. Students will be looking at different 3D objects to determine the surface area of the object and its volume. The culminating activity for this will be for the students to write a story that uses the concepts of surface area in order to teach them to a younger grade. At the end of the term we will be having Probability Day and experiment with different types of probability with both classes coming together to work at various stations. .

Dance will be part of our gym classes third term. We will be learning the basic steps in ballet and hip hop and learning dance routines in both styles.

Our Health projects were a great success! This term we will be focussing on Growth and Development with an emphasis on healthy relationships. We will be looking at different media that represent relationships and discovering positive and negative effects of media on perceptions. If you have any questions regarding this unit, please do not hesitate to ask.

Our trip to the Wye Marsh was a great success with the students looking at different ecosystems (forest and aquatic) and had a lot of fun dip netting off the boardwalk in the marsh. Many interesting things were collected and studied at this time. The other half of the day was spent sketching and painting the wildlife around them using watercolours in the fashion of "real"artists.
