New Library Time
In junior division, students are allowed to sign out books for 2 week periods, however our exchange time has varied. From now on, we will be exchanging library books every Thursday at 11:15, starting this week! Students do not have to exchange weekly, if they want to keep their books, but are expected to read silently in the library during that period.

We have had some really nice weather this week, however, it is still winter. Please remind your children that they should be going outside, wearing the winter clothing they brought with them to school. It is also important that they keep their winter clothing on while outside, to avoid becoming ill.
We recently completed our biography unit. Looking at the characteristics of biographies, learning about some well known people and studying their acheivements. As a final project, students completed their own miniature biographies on one of the 3 Olympic Mascots. I was quite impressed with these, as were the students. These have been taken home and hopefully you have also had a chance to admire them.
In math, we are completing our unit on measurement, which has included looking at particular units, including mm, cm, m and km as well as perimeter, area and time. Having your child read both analogue and digital clocks, and giving reasonable times for certain events, e.g. "What time do we usually eat dinner at" or "about how much time do we spend before, during and after swimming lessons?" helps make this concept real for your child.
The students are also having a blast learning about light and sound. They have recently completed 2 experiments where they built simple tools to demonstrate concepts, and the learning that has taken place is impressive. Excellent work grade 4's!
Homework is not assigned on a regular basis. The best homework assignment you can provide is regular, sustained reading for 20 minutes daily (during dinner prep, before bed, after dinner, before a favourite t.v. program, etc).
Even though your child is now in junior division, reading to them is another excellent way to develop literacy, and good reading practises.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me before or after school during regular office hours.
