Greetings from Grades Two and Three!
We’re mid-way through term two and everyone is busy learning something new. Both grades are exploring how to build a good paragraph in preparation for report writing. We’re also learning about inference as a reading comprehension strategy. Inferences are evidence-based guesses. Readers take information from the text and combine it with what they already know to make an inference. Sometimes we call it “reading between the lines” or we say “2 + 2 = 4”.
We’ve had some visits from Mrs. Con, Emma King’s literacy consultant. She is helping the children understand the differences between level 1 (D), level 2 (C), level 3 (B) and level 4 (A) answers. The students are noticing that better answers include information from the text. So, when students write answers to questions about what they are reading, they should be sure to include evidence from the text. You can practise this at home by asking and answering questions when you’re reading each night. When your child gives an answer, ask them how they know and get him/her to show you in the text.
In math we are still adding and subtracting larger numbers. There are new links for some fun math activities that use place value as an adding and subtracting strategy. Click the Amoeba links to try them out. They are wonderful. These activities are most appropriate for the Grade Three students but with parental help, the Grade Twos could give them a go too.
There are a few new science and language links. Sharpen your skills by checking out the apostrophe game called “Beat the Clock” and learn about past, present and future tenses by playing “Treasure Hunt”. You can also practise making jot notes and write your own report at home. Have fun!
Sincerely,
