How Parents Can Help

Homework Policy

Students learn best by working with problems and engaging in math talk with other students. There is not just one way to solve a problem. It is important to understand the math concepts, rather than learn formulas.

We highly recommend the Mathwire site for good problems to practice at home. Watch how your child tackles the problem. Does she or he read the problem carefully and rephrase it in his or her own words?

Ways to tackle a problem:

1. Draw a picture.
2. Use a table or T-chart, or graph to arrange data.
3. Guess and check.
4. Solve the problem by substituting easier numbers.
5. Work backwards.
6. Look for a pattern.
7. Act it out.
8. Indentify necessary information; ignore the unnecessary.
9. Choose an operation and try it out. Is the answer reasonable?
