MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE
The snowy weather winter continues to have a good hold on all of us, and we have some of the biggest hills in our school yard this winter. We are continually keeping an eye on conditions to allow our students to have fun and remain safe, it is a tricky balance. Students have participated in some field trips over the past couple of months enjoying different environments and representing Emma King extremely well. We have received excellent feedback from the staff of different locations on how respectful our students have been during these trips. We want to thank the staff for organizing these experiences and the volunteers for sharing their time with our students.
Extra-curricular activities are keeping many busy at Emma King. We are winding up our Intermediate Boys’ Basketball and Girls’ Volleyball teams with area tournaments before the March Break. Our Junior Girls and Boys’ Basketball team continue for a few weeks, and we have started a Skipping Club for students in Gr 4-6 who are looking to increase their skills and learn some tricks. The Chess Club continues to strategize and practise their next moves, and our choirs are always working on their next song to share at an assembly. We are very fortunate to have different options for our students to participate in outside of instruction time and would like to thank our staff who volunteer their time to provide those opportunities.
We are all looking forward to the March Break that is coming up the week of March 16th. Whether you are travelling or staying in the area, we hope everyone has an enjoyable week.
Yours in education,
Mrs. Cindy McNeice
Attendance and Lates
Consistent attendance and arriving on time play a key role in helping students feel confident and connected at school. When students are present each day, they stay up to date with classroom learning and school activities, which supports both their academic progress and their sense of belonging.
To encourage strong attendance habits, Emma King has been leading our school-wide attendance program. Each month, we track student attendance and celebrate those who maintain 90% or higher. Students who meet this goal receive certificates and small prizes as recognition for their commitment.
Punctuality matters as well. Even a few minutes late each day can add up, arriving just 5 minutes late daily equals roughly 3 full days of lost learning over a school year. The first 100 minutes of the day are especially important, as they set the tone for learning and have a significant impact on student success.
We understand that every family experiences busy mornings or unexpected challenges. Establishing consistent routines at home can make a big difference in helping students get to the bus or morning bell on time. If your family needs support with routines or attendance, please reach out to the front office. We’re here to help.
Safe, Inviting and Supportive School Environment
At the SCDSB and at Emma King Elementary School, we are committed to maintaining safe, inviting and supportive school environments, and recognize that all students have the right to be safe, and feel safe, in our schools. With this right comes the responsibility to contribute to a positive school climate.
We want you to know that any incident of racism, bias or hate will not be tolerated. Any such incident is treated very seriously with immediate action and consequences in accordance with the requirements of the Education Act, and consistent with our values and obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code.
Students who engage in acts of racism, bias or hate will face severe consequences as a result of their actions. Please take a moment to review the SCDSB Code of Conduct with your child(ren). The Code of Conduct sets clear standards of behaviour and specifies consequences for student actions that do not comply with these standards.
We are dedicated to educating our students and staff about the injustice and impact of systemic racism. We continue to work with students, staff, parents/guardians and community partners to ensure that our schools are the safe places they are intended to be for all students.
